Ways to conserve corals.
Wednesday, September 3, 2008

-DO NOT throw litter in the sea.
-Do not use the air-con frequently as it will increase the level of carbon dioxide.
-Ask people not to throw litter on the shores of beaches.

This is the end of the list of conserving corals.if you want more ways or advices, search the net.

I think corals are important as they played an important role in the Earth's ecosystem.

Q:Do you think coral conservation is important?

A: Yes, I think it is important as corals can prevent tsunamis from crashing into the shore.

Did you know that most corals contain symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae in their gastrodermal cells? I bet you don't know. The coral also provides the algae with a protected environment and the compounds necessary for photosynthesis.

Zooxanthellae often are critical elements in the continuing health of reef-building corals. When the zooxanthellae are expelled, the colony takes on a stark white appearance, which is commonly described as “coral bleaching”.

Let me share to you some facts about corals.
A slight rise in maximum water temperatures- only one to two degrees- can stress the corals. This causes them to expel the microscopic organisms, known as zooxanthellae, which color their tissues and provide them with essential nutrients.

If the the zooxanthellae do not return, the corals will perish. In 1998, every reef system in the world’s tropical oceans were affected by some degree of bleaching.
Reports says that the frequency and intensity of bleaching is set to rise.

Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg is the lead author of the report(s). He is an expert on coral bleaching at the Sydney University. Coral reefs could be eliminated from most areas within this century. The world largest reef- the Great Barrier Reef off Australia may perish within 30 years unless measures are taken now to slow climate change.

What are Corals?

Coral is describe as a group of cnidarians, which indicates the presence of skeletal material that is embedded in the living tissue. Corals are sessile animals that stay fixed in one place. They catch prey such as small fish and planktonic animals to feed on.

More infomation about corals

I was scanning through the internet when I found out where corals are found. I can tell you the URL of the website I found the facts in the 'credits' part .
Coral reefs are found in about 100 countries. Coral reefs are the world’s most fragile, delicate but most endangered ecosystems. When the corals are stressed by high temperature, they lose their symbiotic algal cells and appear white. Depending on the intensity and duration of the stress, the corals may recover or die. If the present rate of destruction continues, 70% of the world's coral reefs will be destroyed within the next few decades.

I found out this fact in an encyclopedia:
The current climate are destroying the world's great coral reefs within a century, according to a report by German and Australian marine scientists. Researchers say that in order to reduce the emissions of gases such as carbon dioxide, governments must take action NOW! It is also predicted that carbon dioxide is going to be behind a rise in average global temperature.

Coral reefs are the 'rainforest'of the ocean. They are ecologically important ecosystems and have high biodiversity that serves as a storage bank of rich genetic resources. They can be made into medicine and can protect the coast from wave erosion.
