My memories...
Let me share to you some facts about corals.
A slight rise in maximum water temperatures- only one to two degrees- can stress the corals. This causes them to expel the microscopic organisms, known as zooxanthellae, which color their tissues and provide them with essential nutrients.
If the the zooxanthellae do not return, the corals will perish. In 1998, every reef system in the world’s tropical oceans were affected by some degree of bleaching.
Reports says that the frequency and intensity of bleaching is set to rise.
Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg is the lead author of the report(s). He is an expert on coral bleaching at the Sydney University. Coral reefs could be eliminated from most areas within this century. The world largest reef- the Great Barrier Reef off Australia may perish within 30 years unless measures are taken now to slow climate change.
What are Corals?
Coral is describe as a group of cnidarians, which indicates the presence of skeletal material that is embedded in the living tissue. Corals are sessile animals that stay fixed in one place. They catch prey such as small fish and planktonic animals to feed on.
