What are coral reefs?
Tuesday, September 2, 2008

Coral reefs are the 'rainforest'of the ocean. They are ecologically important ecosystems and have high biodiversity that serves as a storage bank of rich genetic resources. They can be made into medicine and can protect the coast from wave erosion.

Corals reefs are the world's most fragile and endangered ecosystems. When they are stressed by high temperature, they lose their symbiotic algal cells and appear white. Depending on the intensity and duration of the high temperature stress, the corals may recover or die. If the present rate of coral reefs destruction continues, 70% of the world's coral reefs will be destroyed within the next few decades.
